Weekly News roundup - 5/8/13 ft. Internet Forever, Lightning Bolt, Sally Dige, True Widow, Beaty Heart, Factory Floor, Teengirl Fantasy and more!

June 1st 2013, one our favourite pop bands ever, Internet Forever concluded their UK tour with a night at London's Old Blue Last. An expanded six-piece line-up threw themselves into Internet Forever's self-titled debut album with muscular aplomb, transforming classics such as 'Break Bones' and 'White Light Collision Course' into fast-paced punk missiles. The record is due for release on 12 August, you can pre-order by clicking here. Listen below for now...

Whenever we get an email from Michael at Night School Recs, we always get excited, as his label has impeccable taste, which is marked by some fabulous releases. Night School's latest gem keeps the trend going in the form of Sally Dige. Sally Dige has recorded two new pulsing, evocative jewels in the form of "Forget Me" and "Losing You." Her second 7" is now available to Preorder HERE. Limited to 300, full colour sleeve and labels, with Download Card and Insert.

True Widow's most recent full-length output, Circumambulation, is a stand out for me this year, carrying on from where they left off with some heavy hitting bone crushing stoner rock. Watch the fab new video for "S:H:S" below, and grab Circumambulation, out now via Relapse Records.

'Negative Dad', the comic book co-written by Wavves' Nathan Williams about mutant teenagers is now available to buy. The art style looks interesting and the story, "the fantastic and disturbing journey of two young mutant boys, Daniel and Serjio, uncovering secrets surrounding their family and friends. This journey ultimately will determine the fate of their world" is intriguing at the very least. Order it HERE

Factory Floor have a new song, 'Turn it Up'. Need we say more. You have your instructions.

Check out the new video for Ariel Pink's collaboration with Violens/Lansing Dreiden member Jorge Elbrecht. Nice.

New Band of the Week - 15/07/2013 - Thought Forms

Every now and then you do find something extra special, and Thought Forms are extra special. The glassy vocals of Blonde Redhead, the intricate guitar interplay and dynamics of Mogwai (or even Metallica) and mathematical drumming of Battles (although the drummer can switch to stoner drumming ala True Widow in a flash and with the utmost grace). Yes, this sounds too good to be true, but they're indeed a real band that exist and are busy plying their trade up and down the UK converting gig goers lucky enough to catch them. Geoff Barrow of Portishead fame has signed them up to his Invada label and he's onto a winner we reckon.

New Band of the Week – 22/08/2011 - True Widow

OK, so you'll hear them on our podcast that goes up later this week, and may well be forgiven for thinking that we work for them. The truth is, this band make me rather excited about music, in particular rock music. I hate that the industry works in cycles; sometimes I really don't want 5,000 similar sounding bands shoved down my throat all in one month. Why can't good bands exist, and their time be now because they are amazing? This brings us nicely to True Widow, who sound like a complete different entity to a lot of the new music that has graced my ears in the last 12 months.

True Widow released their sophomore album, As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth, in March this year, and my enthusiasm for this album has remained. Every great band would appear to share certain qualities that enables them to survive the space time continuum, when otherwise hours upon months of MP3 is confined to the annals for yet another year. True Widow share these basic qualities, and focus on the most important, beautiful melody. The vocal, bass and guitar each produce melodies that accompany each other much like a string quartet. Neither can exist without the other, yet each melody stands out without ever muddying the other. A tiny part of this may be down to production, which no doubt helps, as rumbling gritty bass lines sit comfortably with crystalline vocals, whilst the hypnotic yet never-too-loudly-distorted guitar provides the finishing chords and harmonious nuances that elevate the music and showcase the vocals. This is demonstrated rather well on the below track "Skull Eyes". I have purposely veered away from comparing them to anyone, because as implied, it’s the melodies that I've taken away from their music, rather than any sort of aesthetic they may conjure up. AF
