New Band of the Week - 2-9/13 - Forrests

So, we're back to school, work, lounging around. Not sure what your deal is, but I'm back to school/work literally today, so that means a morning commute. And that my friend means listening to a tonne of music. And what better place to start than Forrests, who, are an extremely worthy new band of the week.

Falling somewhere in between Fuck Buttons, Mogwai with the slightest hint of Skrillex, it is hard to pin point precisely where their influences lie as, the sound encompasses a broad and eclectic range. 'Billions' below hits like a wave with sound washing gently yet simultaneously aggressively into your ears, and then a small Super Furries-esque sample lifts the songs with occasional drops.

The fuzzed basslines hide their hard edge by providing melody underneath the sometimes Cathedral type reverbed samples, which usually float on top, again washing the listener in textures and subtle chord changes. Forrests switch brilliantly between the dance dynamic and quieter blissed out  moments, and that's what set them out from the crowd. Do give them a listen, they've certainly made my morning commute playlist.

I am actually burnt, but I'm not going to complain. Living in Prague did mean a 6 month long winter, which sucked so badly. The sun is beating down, and I'm crisping better then your mum's plantain fritters and I'm loving it.

New Band of the Week - 15/07/2013 - Thought Forms

Every now and then you do find something extra special, and Thought Forms are extra special. The glassy vocals of Blonde Redhead, the intricate guitar interplay and dynamics of Mogwai (or even Metallica) and mathematical drumming of Battles (although the drummer can switch to stoner drumming ala True Widow in a flash and with the utmost grace). Yes, this sounds too good to be true, but they're indeed a real band that exist and are busy plying their trade up and down the UK converting gig goers lucky enough to catch them. Geoff Barrow of Portishead fame has signed them up to his Invada label and he's onto a winner we reckon.
