Top 3@3:33 - Riot Grrrl

AaAAarrrrrGGGhHHH!!! I just read this rather good and properly infuriating Guardian article - it firstly made me question why people have to be such enormous douchebags, it secondly made me find a Bikini Kill track on Youtube, crank up the volume and dance around a bit. 

As I'm sure many of you will know, riot grrrl started in the early '90s and is essentially punk-inspired, incendiary music: hard-edged, grungy, raw and gritty. It has a political and social message, with a feminist agenda. Lyrically, and stylistically, it's confrontational, challenging, liberating and empowering - here are my top 3 riot grrrl tracks: 

Thursday Top 3 @ 3:33 - April Fools special

Thinking about April fools has made me nostalgic. I'm remembering the days when the cheekiest member of SNH spent weeks planning his next epic prank to play on unsuspecting people at work. And also the days when he got pranked himself.

Highlights included:

- Texting a manager's phone with a scary message from HR telling her she was being reprimanded for looking at 'inappropriate material'.
- Doctoring emails to convince a (very fragile) guy that he'd been caught out slagging off managers and was getting fired. On his birthday. The day after just being dumped.
- Rigging the vote in the 'best hair' competition, at the yearly awards, so a bald, angry manager won.
- Emailing fellow SNH member to offer to buy the guitar case he was selling on the work noticeboard. 


Anyway buddy - this Top 3 is for you. Lucky you finally quit your job, although it's far less entertaining without you!

We asked lead singer Rebecca Collins of UHOE what the Danish band has been listening to lately. She was kind enough to do a quick musical 'whip round' with the other band members, and this is what they came up with:

The Late Great Fitzcarraldos - 'Jesu'

"We're really enjoying this song from Danish band The Late Great Fitzcarraldos at the moment... very dreamy/sexy....or sex-dreamy!"

Young Marble Giants - 'Final Day'

"Our bass player Jeppe Skovbakke gave me YMG's album Colossal Youth as a follow-up to some chat we'd had about rhythm guitar. This song is a favourite of mine, even though it's not on the album, I think it was only released as a single. To my ears, they have the ultimate bedroom-band sound. I love the intensity of it."

Portishead - 'Machine Gun'

"We are all big Portishead fans but our drummer Gramski (Jeppe Gram) is particularly into this song - his exact words are: "It's a mix of very ancient sounding melody and really new sounding beat. I must say I love it!" 'Nuff said."

Before winter's wrecking ball oppressed us all into a dungeon-dank prison, there was this magical fable called summer; where friends once frolicked wild and free in far away lands laden with music festivals and fish-bowl tumblers of gin. During this whimsical season somebody (lovely) allowed THIS SNH member, to procreate. Thankfully the result was a beautiful baby girl born in January, which has been a much welcome distraction from said wrecking ball.
