Top 3@3:33 - Riot Grrrl

AaAAarrrrrGGGhHHH!!! I just read this rather good and properly infuriating Guardian article - it firstly made me question why people have to be such enormous douchebags, it secondly made me find a Bikini Kill track on Youtube, crank up the volume and dance around a bit. 

As I'm sure many of you will know, riot grrrl started in the early '90s and is essentially punk-inspired, incendiary music: hard-edged, grungy, raw and gritty. It has a political and social message, with a feminist agenda. Lyrically, and stylistically, it's confrontational, challenging, liberating and empowering - here are my top 3 riot grrrl tracks: 

Keel Her release 7" 'Riot Grrrl' - 03/12/12 - Critical Heights

Hell yeah! This track is - for want of a better word - wicked! - I was tempted to go with 'wizard' - I'm not sure if that's better? And so I digress...either way, we're definitely loving the new track. 

We've had our eyes, or should I say ears, on Keel Her for a pretty long time.  Both "Riot Grrrl" and the b-side "You Would Be So Grossed Out If I Did That" are the first songs by KEEL HER to be recorded in an actual studio (Tie Dye Tapes in Sheffield) rather than in Rose Keeler-Schäffeler bedroom.  The tracks still sound lo-fi, but less grainy and distorted, which it great.
