Baltimore’s Thank You aren’t a new band as such, but it’s this year’s extremely impressive release Golden Worry that brought them to Scene Not Herd’s grateful ears.
This is music propelled by rhythm and focused on sound, not melody. The drum clatter is an almost constant presence, driving the songs and pushing them onward, even during lengthy, repetitive jam sections. Over this sit the hypnotic organ sounds and high squalls of guitar.
Overall the three-piece (four with the recent addition of a bassist) creates restless, absorbing songs, which suck the listener in through grooves – often frantic, occasionally relaxed and seductive – before wheeling off to unsuspected places.
SNH regulars could compare them with Please, and there are occasional snatches where the polyrhythms, pop hooks and unison voices are reminiscent of a more immediate, less studied Yeasayer.
Thank You have just completed a tour of Europe (including a number of dates supporting Battles) and we hope they’ll be back again soon. Here’s Pathetic Magic from Golden Worry:
