Gardens & Villa seem to have found a rich vein of broody bittersweet synth pop to mine in their sunny Californian home of Santa Barbara. Their debut album is fresh out on Secretly Canadian and this track "Black Hills" should give you a good idea why the heady mix of pining vocals and electro-goodness puts a spring in our step.
It's dark in tone but with just enough of a whiff of good times - these are the tunes I imagine playing in my head as my fictional stalker moodily plods home from a bar late on a summer's night, having lost his target again in the backstreets and alleyways of my mind. Lens flares, cigarette smoke, and long long nights.
I've said too much.
Gardens & Villa are Chris Lynch, Adam Rasmussen, Levi Hayden, Shane McKillop and Dusty Ineman. They are touring the US with Foster the People at the moment, but here's hoping they make the jump to the UK soon.
