SNH Advent #6 - Upset The Rhythm

We're dead chuffed to have find Upset The Rhythm's Chris Tipton under door number 6. Without these guys, the London (and UK) music scene would be a lot worse of, so enjoy the following insight into UTR's 2012!

What were your Upset the Rhythm highlights of 2012?

Oh, definitely taking Peepholes, Way Through and Gentle Friendly on a wintry label tour early this year through the snow, ruins and DIY spaces of Britain, very memorable, especially getting stuck in a drift at a deserted medieval village in Yorkshire and having to use empty record boxes to rescue the van!
Touring with Future Islands was also brilliant, I think they've become one of the most arresting live bands out there and such quality songs, we were also lucky enough to release their new single, 'Tomorrow', two months ago and it's such a leap and bound for them, total future pop.
Other highlights have been working with The Pheromoans and Peepholes on their albums for Upset The Rhythm too, I can't think of two better bands that put UK underground music on the map. The Pheromoans have a genius way with words and music, 'Does This Guy Stack Up?' has hardly left our turntable, whilst Peepholes fully transcended when they supported John Maus for us at The Scala back in August. Their new album 'The Overspill' (out this week) only further exceeds my expectations, so impressive!
We were also very fortunate in July to work with Eyeless In Gaza (certainly one of my all time favourite bands) on a show in Covent Garden's stunning Swiss Church, Martyn's voice was simply sensational and soaring. Last but not least, another highlight for UTR has been releasing Ed Schrader's Music Beat's debut album 'Jazz Mind' and bringing them over recently to Europe (tour finished 3 days ago!). Seeing them play in a perspex box slowly filling with dry ice in a sweaty room full of dancing maniacs at Sounds Of The Other City was simultaneously epic and hilarious, much like Ed and Devlin themselves.

What was your favourite non-UTR musical highlight of 2012?
That's a tough one, 'America' by Dan Deacon is looking like my favourite album of the year, you can listen to it countless times and always hear something different, more layers than an onion. I always think Dan deserves way more credit for his recorded output. Seeing Cleaners From Venus' long-deserved rise from the obscure margins has also been great. I'd say both of Ty Segall's albums this year have been must-hears, also really enjoyed the Divorce album on Night School, Helm on PAN, Sauna Youth's debut and the 'Museums IV' tape/zine box on Comfortable On A Tightrope / Museum Press

What can we expect from Upset the Rhythm in 2013?

Yes, we're looking fairly busy already, we have albums readying for Halo Halo, Trash Kit, Silver Fox and Way Through. Plus there's shows lining up for Pete Swanson, Tropa Macaca, Matmos, Wild Nothing, Mirroring, Jessica Bailiff, Thee Oh Sees and No Age to name but a few. We're also going to be working with SPACE gallery on two special events centred around Raymond Pettibon's films too.

Can we have a link to a Christmas track that you like please?

Why this track?

Any Xmas song still around 500 years after it was written should earn a special mention, sing out in brightness!

Can we have a link to an Upset the Rhythm track that people should be listening to right now?

Peepholes, perfecting the tucked in/tucked out look
Right now, it's all about 'The Overspill', enjoy...
