New Band of the Week 29/08/11 - French Films

What the hell has happened to summer in the UK over the last few years? Like, it’s August right? Yesterday we went to Brighton; I ended up soaking wet, and wearing a woolly hat to fend off the cold. I guess it’s better than last year; we were soggy and freezing at Reading; I remember having to go sit in our friend’s car for 10 minutes with the heater on, before Blink came on.

This week’s band of the week, French Films, are not French – they’re Finnish. They probably just like French movies a lot; which is fair enough. They make sunny music from a cold place. Maybe they’re sick of the cold too and just want it to be sunny; I guess it is sunny in their minds – it’s sunny in my mind when I listen to them.

As a band they are completely uncomplicated; making upbeat pop tunes, about being happy and about being sad. For these guys, life is as simple as that. There is an occasional air of darkness about their songs; generally through the vocal delivery, but fear not, this is often juxtaposed by happy riffs, pumping drums and nice lyrics about love (or something to that effect).

If you like Crystal Stilts and Beach Fossils you’ll probably like these surf happy, sun seekers too. - SA
