LOUD & QUIET
Since its inception, there has only been one music magazine we feverishly look forward to every month, and that is Loud & Quiet. We've discovered some amazing bands in there, and Loud & Quiet is never afraid to tread new ground, promoting new and established artists in equal measures, and on top of that, the writing is top notch. Hence it is a massive pleasure to have the founder of Loud & Quiet, Stuart Stubbs in the SNH hot seat today. Do read on!
What were your Loud & Quiet highlights of 2012?
I've been watching this new show on TV called Supersized Earth. There's only been 2 so far but it's already a highlight of mine. For example, did you know that more people live above the 14th floor in Hong Kong than live in the whole of Chicago? That's incredible knowledge right there! In terms of the magazine, though, our highlights have probably been launching a new website, even though we're not really website people. We were also very happy to see Alt-J win the Mercury, and proud to have been a small part of that in the beginning with releasing the first single. It has meant, however, that we have no idea what to release next with the label.
What can we expect from you and L&Q in 2013?
We'll be 8 next year, but how do you celebrate that? We'll probably try to throw some kind of party, and we're a media partner of Primavera Sound next year, which we're really honored by. Ultimately though, I think we'll just keep on doing what we do, featuring the bands we want to, printing a music paper in a world of iPads.
Can we have a link to a Christmas track that you like please?
Why this track?
Personally, I'm a sucker for Christmas songs, so there are so many I like. I fucking hate 'The Power of Love', though, which isn't even a Christmas song, so I don't know why it always appears on compilations. 'Stop The Cavalry' is great because it's about war and christmas at the same time, not Brian Harvey in a white parker. Really though, it reminds me of growing up, which, let's face it, is what makes Christmas songs great. I'm just thankful that I'm not in the 'Mr Blobby' generation. Can you imagine your happiest memories being soundtracked by that?!
Can we have a link to a track by an artist L&Q are tipping for great things in 2013?
Well, we've always found Ones To Watch a tricky concept, because do you a.) choose someone you want everyone to be watching, or b.) someone that you think will be a big mainstream hit, that people will watch whether you like them or not? Gabriel Bruce, I think, could be the man to straddle both of those things though. He's got some pop hits and he's a real character, and he's actually thinking about what he's doing...
