Myself (Joel) and Adam met in our hometown in New Zealand a few years ago through seeing eachother at shows, and David had also met Adam the same way. I met David at a party at my house a few years later and knew that he was a good drummer and asked him to be in a band Adam and I had started. We didn't really have much of an idea, it just came through from playing together for a while. I guess its still developing which keeps it interesting.
We had our first show booked and didn't have a name but kept getting hassled for it by the promoters, so we gave ourselves a week to come up with some names then we met up and decided. Popular Strangers was the only one we could all agree on then we shortened it.
Psych pop.
I find it interesting to see what people hear in our songs, because normally I haven't even really listened to more than one or two songs by the artists. I do however like the Beach Boys, but I'd say we just take on various influences, be in contemporary or older classic stuff. I don't know of any bands or artists that I would want to directly sound like and I try to avoid that in songwriting. But I listened to alot of pop music growing up so I guess that sticks with me.
In one week we move to London, then we are going to try and play lots of shows to make some money to live, and hopefully if we can find the right time/money we will record the new album we have written.

Yep, the real reason they're moving to London, the weather |
We just played a final show in NZ last week which was fun. A festival named Chronophonium here in NZ which we played at over the summer was really fun too. I'm looking forward to our first show in London and going on tour.
It was fairly easy recording it, and we had a fair idea of what we wanted. Mainly just to sound warmer and richer than our previous stuff. Tom Healey who engineered and mixed the album had a lot of great ideas too and worked hard on the album. Some songs came through better or different than we expected when we listened to them back.
Touring or recording?
Its hard to say, touring is fun, although we haven't been on a huge tour yet, but I'm more excited about getting our new songs recorded.
Cat's Eyes give direction, and that song is about thoughtless journey. And Heaven is about somewhere far more desirable. So I guess the meaning's are quite literal but not so much that any of our songs are actually about religion. More just the themes surrounding.
Shanalog, Deer Park, Rackets, Seth Frightening, Ghost Wave, The Coolies, Wilberforces, plus heaps more I can't think of right now. Definitely lots of great ones I have missed though.
Favourite movie soundtrack....
I liked the Romeo and Juliet Baz Luhrmann soundtrack when I was younger. Also I like the soundtrack for the Life Aquatic by Wes Anderson. And Wristcutters a love story has a good one too. I'm having trouble remembering today.
Odd fact...Our Ancestors are from England. Thats why we are coming over.
Antipodes is out now on Carpark Records. Click here to buy. You should.
